Contrary to what most think, Ronnie and Neil Young were friends...it is reputed that Neil wrote the song 'Powderfinger' for Ronnie and he died before LS could record it.
Here is a rendition of the song done by the Canadian group Cowboy Junkies.'
"Young recorded a solo acoustic version of "Powderfinger" in September 1975 (never officially released), and later sent the tape to his friend Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd who were to use the song on their next album.[9][4] However, Van Zant died in a plane crash in October 1977, and Lynyrd Skynyrd never recorded the song.[9][4] The song was officially released as an electric version with the band Crazy Horse on Young's 1979 album Rust Never Sleeps."
