During a private fundraiser earlier this year, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told a small group of wealthy contributors what he truly thinks of all the voters who support President Barack Obama. He dismissed these Americans as freeloaders who pay no taxes, who don't assume responsibility for their lives, and who think government should take care of them. Fielding a question from a donor about how he could triumph in November, Romney replied:

There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax.

This is the first time in months, that I think Obama is going to be re-elected.

What Mitt says is true. But you can’t say it. This will alienate a block of voters that he was depending on. Makes him look non caring.

Many on here are trying to spin this as a positive. It’s not. Mitt may still win, but this is going to cost him in the short term. He better get on top of this tonite. Needs to call a news conference like Bush in 2000 and just explain.

Considering how many Republicans/conservatives have lost their jobs, homes, businesses, savings, etc, over the past 5 years....

In fact, I know people from welders to engineers who have not only lost it all, but were actually reduced to collecting food stamps. Not everyone is a professional taker.

One other thing, Romney said something to the effect, "Had he been born of Mexican parents, I'd have a better shot of winning this."

I'd bet this won't go over well in some parts...

I am just sick at my stomach tonite. I think the election is now over. For months, I have believed in my heart of hearts, that Obama was going to lose and lose pretty big. I didn’t believe the skewed media polls. I knew in the end, the Americans would see through the media bias and throw Obama out.

This is bad. No positive was to spin it.

Mitt needs to call a news conference tonite to address this.

Can’t disagree with anything Romney said there, except I think its more like 50 percent instead of 47 percent.

A goodly portion of that 47 or 50 percent are not in it by choice. Romney needs to explain how to the folks in that group he's going to enable them to rise up out of it. It's a mistake to write them off.

Romney has to talk about how with his plan those people will get to working again. But Romney is right about how there is a lot of people in this country(Obama voters) who will vote for Obama no matter what because they know they will continue to get their “Obama money.”

People dependent on Govt wouldnt vote for Romney anyway so who cares what they think. I have seen enough polls which show that people want Govt out of their lives. This video will help Romney NOT hurt him. The only ones that will not vote for him are the ones who wouldn’t vote for him anyway

You can bet, there are some really PO’d people in the Romney camp over this video, because it was obtained covertly.

Those old folks are looking at their younger children and older grandchildren who've been unemployed for most of the last 5 years when they should have been working and they're saying to themselves, "why don't you focus on jobs first before talking about taxing people with marginal incomes' ~ which is because the old codgers are smart and know that taxing the poor doesn't create jobs except for IRS auditors and federal courts.

Tax reform and bringing back prospertiy are two different things ~ and class warfare based on who has a job and who doesn't really doesn't cut it with the folks who are dealing with it directly.

Frankly we need a tax system like we had before the Civil War. That was based mostly on raising federal revenues with tariffs. A more modern era might well think raising federal revenues with excise taxes on bond sales and stock purchases might be in order (before you have a heart attack that's just for a different sort of example).

You would, of course, simply eliminate all other federal taxes and repeal the 16th amedment.

Most individuals would not have to deal with federal taxes at all in any way with an ideal tax scheme. You'd restrict tax communication to large businesses ~

As far as fair share is concerned, that depends on who is defining 'share' and 'fair' ~ and so far I've never seen such a tax proposed that would be acceptable to me!,

BTW, even postage isn't fair. There are enormous elements of cross subsidization that are highly questionable.

We had this problem with both the Big Dems in the race ~ Romney and Perry ~ their acolytes found it necessary to run behind them with a pan and broom trying to clean up the mess and 'splain to us what they'd really meant when they'd said something exceedingly obvious.

Not to chortle too much as the feelings of impending doom undoubtedly run up the legs of Mitt's followers, but this is exactly what I was talking about last year!

No, your candidate, even if he's not really yours but somebody else's and you'd rather not have Obama back should be going around to small groups of campaign donors of possibly unknown provence and confiding in them that he thinks a little less than half the population are congenital Obama voters!

Actually, it's far more than half ~ he wiped us off the map in 2008!

We just don't need to have those private conversations once the campaign is underway, and he shouldn't be saying anything there that he's not willing to say openly to everybody.

The basic assumption these days is that any candidate can be turned into a 3-D walking talking automaton with ease ~ your friendly neighborhood Wal-mart has the video capability to make it so ~ if you need an example.

You do know there are people who are dependent on the government through no fault of their own and would rather live life differently, and they are reliable Republican voters.

Comments like yours just write them off as so many ciphers on a list.

True, I wouldn't vote for Romney but would vote for a conservative candidate.

Another thing -- just because someone like me who had to quit working at age 44 might receive assistance (I don't receive disability but could have), doesn't mean their entire value system was altered and compromised when the first check arrived. Same with ex-military, retired, etc.

Pretty much all of us realize the present system is unsustainable.
