3) Romero zombies. These are the ponderous, shuffling zombies that crave human brains, likely because they are starved for the specific fatty tissues called myelin, mostly found in quantity in the brain, to support their unusual metabolism.

Myelin is a dielectric (electrically insulating) material that forms a layer, the myelin sheath, usually around only the axon of a neuron. It is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system. Myelin is an outgrowth of a type of glial cell. The production of the myelin sheath is called myelination. During infancy, myelination occurs quickly and continues through the adolescent stages of life.

Well, technically, most of the fat in the brain is DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), so maybe that is what the zombies are craving. But if this was the case, then zombies would crave fish and flax seed oil, to get their Omega-3 DHA.

Rather odd to imagine them stumbling about, going “Salmon!”

However, the human brain is loaded with myelin, much more than other animals.

“The extensive scope of myelination is the single-most unique aspect in which the human brain differs from that of other species... The percentage of dry brain weight in humans accounted for by myelin is 30% higher than in rodents.”

Which probably explains why zombies aren’t craving mice, either.
