awk is a good one. Not sure if I can beat that for obscurity. :)

HINT: awk isn’t really an acronym. It is initials.

Also an alternate, but not the main one reported (nor the alternate I learned eons ago).

The one I find at the top of most lists of meanings for grep is “global regular expression print”.
The one I learned many moons ago is “general regular expression parser”.

You might appreciate this...
sed 's/#/ /g' $FILE | awk '{print $11}' | sort | uniq -c | sort -nr > $FILE.client
This is the heart of a script that would process raw BIND logs, and output a list of clients to a DNS server in order from highest to lowest hitters. Among other things, it allowed me to identify misconfigured servers. On several occasions, I identified Unix servers that had lost their mind, and were querying for their own names 30+ times per second. The same thing, searching for $7 would tell me how many times a given host was looked up.

Now blindly downloading distributions is a bit of a scattergun approach to finding out whether Linux is right for you. If you are completely new to Linux then you probably would not want to face the daunting task of installing Slackware. Oh, come off it mate. It's not that complicated.
The pain you feel today is the strength you'll have tomorrow.

Probably trouble with the X server. Not having used Ubuntu (loaded it once, didn't like it), I am not going to give detailed help, but I can say that if you can get into a command line, have a look at /var/log/messages, toward the end, you will likely find out what is going wrong.
If you can get the Gnome desktop by booting from a live CD, it's probably a configuration issue. In any case, live CD's usually include a rescue boot option which would allow you to mount the hard drive and edit whatever was broken. But you would find out what needs fixing by looking at /var/log/messages.

Well, there isn't one for Linux specifically, but I run a Tech Ping list that pings to tech articles I find interesting. It frequently pings Linux articles.
I've added you to it.
