Stories like this are why my home defense strategy has been rebuilt around a battle rifle as opposed to a handgun or shotgun. The threatening scum sometimes wear armor.

You do not need the rifle; “boar rounds” do nicely at penetrating kevlar garments.
They are available in .357, .44, and .454 (all ‘wheel’ guns)

I'm not sure what a battle rifle is, but sounds great.
Remember though in a shotgun use birdshot, birdshot, slug. Body armor will not stop the slug.
