Recently watched a BBC program that featured the exhumation of a Spitfire from a peat bog in Donegal, Ireland. The story of the American pilot that parachuted from the plane is extraordinary in itself, but what is even more extraordinary, is the fact that the Browning machine guns onboard were discovered intact. They were cleaned and fired after 70 years buried in the bog. There was air still in one of the plane's tires, and fuel was running out of the engine as it was lifted out of the ground. The pilot's leather flying cap was still intact and pliable, and they found the service manual intact, and still readable. For anyone who is interested, here's a link to the story:
