Frozen in time: The ammunition was discovered as a glacier melted in Trentino
Conflict: The ammunition was spread over a 100-square-metre area between 1915 and 1918

Hmm. Guess there wasn't a glacier there during the war, then. Must have been the big 1915 global warming crisis allowed troops up there to deposit ammo supplies.

There has to be a line about France surrendering somewhere in this one...

A whole bunch of high explosive shells with the unstable fuses corroded in place.
Someone is going to really earn their pay over the next few weeks...

Looks like remnants of the wood shipping boxes scattered around. Old stuff but likely still deadly.

The most amazing part of this article is that the Italians actually have a unit called “the Finance Police Alpine rescue unit.”
Who would the Financial Police be rescuing normally? Bankers who get stuck on a ski lift?
To: Leaning Right
Rescuing the vacationing bankers’ wallets no doubt ...

Holy crap!
Recently watched a BBC program that featured the exhumation of a Spitfire from a peat bog in Donegal, Ireland. The story of the American pilot that parachuted from the plane is extraordinary in itself, but what is even more extraordinary, is the fact that the Browning machine guns onboard were discovered intact. They were cleaned and fired after 70 years buried in the bog. There was air still in one of the plane's tires, and fuel was running out of the engine as it was lifted out of the ground. The pilot's leather flying cap was still intact and pliable, and they found the service manual intact, and still readable. For anyone who is interested, here's a link to the story:

Of course if some 7.62x54R ever melts out of a glacier you can bet it’ll be on sale for $70/ 880 rds within and week (and will still work just fine) :)

I think Financial Police are more like Customs.
There’s been a lot of gold etc. being smuggled into Switzerland through the Italian Alps.

They’ve made some remarkable finds in bogs over the years. Makes you wonder just how much more history is yet to be found.
