I prefer the 1911, myself. With it, I only have to miss the target eight times before I can club it to death. With my Glock I have to miss the target 13 times and then it isn’t that great a club. And don’t get me started on the Five seveN...

Face it, if you're gonna use those leetle teeny tiny pointy boolits, you're gonna have to give up "missing."

What does cost have to do with wanting to own quality rather than a plastic pistol.

I kind of like my 6-shot 6” S&W 686. Not a pocket gun but it has enough bulk to be a pussycat. Years ago, I bought up a lot of Winchester Silver Tip 145 gr. HP ammo that was being sold off as surplus by the WV State Police when they went to autos. Nice plinking round. :)

I like all versions of the 686 line. I’ve got a Model 29 that I’m thinking of having converted to an L-frame round butt grip. The N-frame square butt is a bit too big for my hand...can’t get my pinkie around to help with magnum loads.

I’ve got a Blackhawk in SS & 357. Weighs 46 oz. Shooting the hottest 357 loads I’ve found manufactured doesn’t sting at all with it...but it WOULD be a beast to carry! Still, if I ran out of ammo, it would make a heck of a hammer...

In the interest of full disclosure...I have been a 1911 /.45 acp fan boy since my first day of small arms instruction at USN gunnery school. The instructor joked that he was so old he was actually an enlisted USN Gunners mate when the 1911 was introduced...but it was actually true. But he was more of a fan of the .45 acp round...and went into great detail why.

I became a true believer then...and still am.

However...it is not for everyone or every situation.

It is second in line in my personal home defense strategy...right behind the old single shot 12 ga. I can control my entire home from one spot...both main entrances....from a totally concealed position. Unless it’s a highly trained tactical squad of 6-8 badguys invading....I figger a sudden flaming blast of 12 ga that kill...errr...removes a large portion of the first one or two guys and splatters it against the block wall...the other one or two will be trying to exit as fast as they can with pants now heavy from being soiled.

If there happens to be a “survivor” after that...the old single shot made of 80 year old steel and walnut..makes an excellent...most excellent....ummm..finishing tool...but just in case...the old 1911 is there if needed.

I carry it out when I’m going places like camping/fishing...where concealment isn’t an issue. Like the nine...it does go riding with me as a backup...but for cc inside a public building...no...it’s not the best tool for that.

But for actual concealed carry...I chose between a nice, smooth, 9mm....or a .38 wheel with 4”barrel...or a derringer that holds two nice rounds of .410 shells loaded for this purpose. The 9mm actually stays in the car for the most part....because odds are I ain’t gonna need those many shots in a typical...citizen CC encounter. I can easily carry both the .38 and derringer concealed..without discomfort or problem...in summer.

The one common theme throughout my personal defense strategy is....From the single shot..to the 1911...to the revolver and derringer....there is the safety factor of a hammer. From a young age...I always liked having a hammer...it unnerves me to carry a hammerless firearm...like a glock...with one in the pipe. It’s my personal safety thing....others may think differently. The other theme throughout my defense strategy is....I buy things that work best for the job...not to be cool...not to spend the most.

OK....my turn....gun owners who spend $1,500 to buy stock sidearms...then spend another $1,000 in custom goodies..who do so not because they are professionals(Military..not local police) who rely with their lives on having what the feel is the best....Who do so not because they shoot competition...who do so not because they have the money and just want to own it....
But do so only to look cool at the range...while making snide comments about your ancient 1911 and .38 revolver...that you paid less than $500 for both...that guy sucks. No one likes the Big dog of the range poser guy...no one.

Nothing, but it does mark you as a luddite of the first order. And more than likely, judging from the way you phrase your contrast "invincibly ignorant," too....

Didn’t bother checking on the history of Glock and not an all-round gun expert - didn’t figure on being “specioused” to. On the other hand, my story is true - my 1911 was manufactured in the Springfield Armory in 1914.

:) No harm, no foul. Just being silly. Impressed that yours is actually a 1914. Just think: That thing was the height of high-tech back in its’ day.

I thought that the firearms community had an all-hands meeting and we overwhelmingly voted to remove all traces of James Yeager from the Internet.

Stop giving attention to that annoying goof.

Well, you know what, I posted these just for entertainment, seeing what kind of comments I’d get.
But, there’s not really anything he says that I can disagree with.

Okay, fine.

Just please don't post anything else related to him, or from him.

Thanks.

No problem. The design is still relevant. BTW - I got the manufacture data by researching via the serial number - amazing the resources available on the internet.
