"Rising at sunset, the gorgeous Full Moon of August 31 became the second Full Moon in a month. According to modern reckoning, that makes it a Blue Moon."

Modern reckoning is wrong. There is a definition of a blue moon and it is NOT the second blue moon in a month...it is the forth full moon in a quarter...which is much rarer and only occurs once in a blue moon.

Close - it’s the third moon in a season with four moons (seasons beginning on the solstice or equinox). The first, middle, and last moons of the seasons all have names, so rather than messing with those titles, the Blue Moon was born.

“...blue moon...it is the forth full moon in a quarter...”

Is that any three month period, or does it have to be a calendar quarter? Oct 29 will be the 4th full moon in the three month period of Aug, Sep, Oct 2012. Will that be a ‘Blue Moon’?
