In the United States, state funerals are held in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., and involve military spectacle, ceremonial pomp, and religious observance. As the highest possible honor bestowed upon a person posthumously, state funerals are an entitlement offered to a sitting or ex-President of the United States, a President-elect, as well as other people designated by the President.[12][13] Administered by the Military District of Washington (MDW), state funerals are greatly influenced by protocol, steeped in tradition, and rich in history. However, the overall planning as well as the decision to hold a state funeral, is largely determined by the President before his death and the First Family.[14]

State funerals have been held in Washington D.C. for William Henry Harrison (1841),[15] Zachary Taylor (1850),[15] Abraham Lincoln (1865),[16] Thaddeus Stevens (1868),[17] James A. Garfield (1881),[15] William McKinley (1901),[15] Warren Harding (1920),[15] the Unknown Soldier of World War I (1921),[18] William Howard Taft (1930),[19] John J. Pershing (1948),[20] the Unknown Soldiers of World War II and the Korean War (1958),[21] John F. Kennedy (1963),[22] Douglas MacArthur (1964),[23] Herbert Hoover (1964),[24] Dwight D. Eisenhower (1969),[25] Lyndon B. Johnson (1973),[26] Ronald Reagan (2004),[27] and Gerald Ford (2006-2007).[28]
