I’ve seen Shapley get more credit, but he was clearly not half-right — he was dead wrong about the size and makeup of the universe, embarrassingly so. Curtis was completely correct, apart from a too-small estimate of the size of the galaxy. But of course, Shapley was an unrepetent Commie.
It seems as if unrepentant commies get all the credit these days.
Too-small estimates about the size of the galaxy can be forgiven, I’d say, given the culture of the time. Not to forget the lack of Hubble-class telescopes.
