The death of liberty.
The death of liberty.
I used to like getting hugs from my Kindergarten teacher.
They were innocent and she hugged everyone.
But, she was a nice looking lady. I did not mind one bit.
If she did that now, she would be getting judged by this crowd at FR....And she was NOT Guilty by any standard.
shucks, i use to go out dove hunting before class in HS in AZ. always kept the shotgun in the trunk of the car. never a problem.
that was in late 60’s early 70’s.
every once in awhile, i would be late for class, if the hunting was good. sometimes early, when i ran out of shells.
can’t imagine what would happen nowdays.
Blessings, bobo
Heck, just the school house itself then was windows
that were raised up for the hot weather...the schools
started in Sept for all us kids finishing up cutting
hay and putting the tobacco in the barn
Metal detectors and police patroling the halls today
in multi-million dollar schools

I've heard old people, or rather really old people, as I'm gray in the beard now myself, spout this nonsense before. What gave rise to these myths? I remember fights from high school, and no one shook hands afterwards. In at least two memorable instances the loser left in an ambulance and the winner was hauled off to jail. I can't think of a single instance where the loser felt good enough to stand up on his own and shake hands.

If you got paddled by the principal or his secretary, you didn't dare tell anybody at home because if you did, your mom or dad would hit you even harder.
Don't remember any discipline problems in that school. When I got to junior high school, it was the start of the 1970s and a whole different world. By time I got to high school in the late 1970s, it was like "Welcome Back Kotter" with the inmates running the asylum. Every class was disrupted by punk kids in leather jackets and nobody learned a damn thing.
“Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.”
Happened to me. Laid a dude out...we were buddies afterwards.
“If she did that now, she would be getting judged by this crowd at FR....And she was NOT Guilty by any standard.”
If she’s NOT GUILTY she has nothing to worry about.
...well, other than that NANNY FReeper that keeps squealing to the mods every time we get a new picture to judge.
We STILL have corporal punishment in Alabama. My son got the whiffle paddle last year from the principal for being a wise-guy and I approved!
He hasn’t done it again. Not my son, nor the principal. As my boy told me, once is enough!
He and a buddy skipped (high) school to go out to the dump to shoot rats. Truant officer catches them, takes them to the principal's office.
The principal says "Boys, I have two questions: Where did you get the ammunition (early days of WWII), and why didn't you ask me to go along?"
A lot of this culture can be changed. For example, though many Americans had lost their family gun culture, they are getting it back remarkably fast now that guns are again seen as being necessary for honest citizens.
It will be a big jump to reintroduce orderly gun culture back to schools, however. While the old style rifle clubs were entertaining or hunting oriented, schools today need to provide for handgun education.
Oddly enough this will need a lot of classroom to do it right, not just range firing. It could and should be a serious class, not just an easy credit hour.
Wow, you must have been in a tough school.
In mine, fistfights ended up with bloody noses and bruises, not much else. I’m not “really old”, I’m 59. I did grow up in a small town where everyone knew one another.
There were neighbor boys down the street that used to harass me when I walked to school My younger brother, Bob, had a fight with one of them, broke his finger, and that was the end of the problem.
2011 - schools criticized for being authoritarian and tyrannical.
1957 - schools criticized for being permissive and letting standards drop.

:)
You’re 11 years older than me, but that shouldn’t make that much of a difference. I saw a kid stand up to a bully and leave in an ambulance with most of his bottom lip hanging off. He never came back to school.
I’m just not getting it. A high school aged boy can hit hard enough to break noses, ribs, cheekbones, or bruise/rupture kidneys, livers, spleens etc. Let’s not even talk about the damage that a HS linebacker could do to another human body.
When I was in high-school in the same time frame (late 60s) and my brother almost 13 years later guns in the pickup rack were standard issue. One each, shotgun and rifle. You never really did know if you were going to be hunting birds, squirrels, rabbits, hogs or deer before or after school. You just had to be prepared. Most of the year tackle box and fishing rod were also carried. We didn’t coon hunt a whole lot, mostly old men did that and used jumping mules to cross the fences and follow the dogs. When we did coon hunt though it was an all night affair. Great memorable fun.
In the early 80s my brother traded pistols with one of his teachers. Gun and clips carried to school on the bus and kept in a locker until the transaction could be made. He traded for one gun and Dad made him take it back because it was a Ruger and Dad thought he got taken in the deal.
Fights at school or anywhere else were seldom. In fact, I can’t remember a single one.
Vietnam was a fear we had but knew we would have to go if called. We had seen others go before us and most of them made it home. Fear is a great motivator to keep your grades up so you could go on to college.
You don’t have to go back too awfully far to find better days than these. It was normal. We didn’t seem to have the government in our face 24 / 7. We had freedom to live out our lives and pursue opportunity. We didn’t have an invasion of illegals insisting on their rights just as if they were citizens. Poor were helped and being a government employee was not the same as hitting the jackpot.
What happened to us?
