One thing I'd like to emphasize for those who haven't actually done it is that unless you've cooked the "visual purple" out of your eyes by spending the day on the beach or ski slope, once your eyes have adapted to the dark, with even a "quarter moon", you can see remarkably well at night with no additional light.

Damn right, even a quarter moon is enough for night-adapted eyes. Unless it’s overcast and you move under thick cover. Then it’s pitch black.
