Word For The Day, Wednesday, August 22, 2012-- penultimate
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
penultimate (pi-nuhl-tuh-mit)
adjective 1. next to the last: the penultimate scene of the play. 2. of or pertaining to a penult. (okay, gang, what the hell is a penult?)
penult (pee-nuhlt, pi-nuhlt) noun, the next to the last syllable in a word
Etymology: Origin:
153040; < Latin paenultima ( syllaba ), contraction of paene ultima almost the last; see pen-, ultima
What penultimate doesnt mean:
"final," "last," "best," or "best of the best."
It means, very simply, "next to the last."
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification.
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
The "next to the last" dem? If only.
I have a yearning for this to be the penultimate post.
Bwahaha. My moment in the sun.
A
Now my reply is last, and your second comment is the penultimate. I have a feeling it won’t stay there for too long. (Hint—don’t reply to this or you’ll be screwed.)
Congrats! You still have the penultimate post. Oh, wait-—
“Now my reply is last, and your second comment is the penultimate. I have a feeling it wont stay there for too long. (Hintdont reply to this or youll be screwed.)”
Curses.
Wait...Curses!
I’d reply, but that would make your post the penultimate again, and we just can’t have that.
Y’all are turning this thread into a Monty Python sketch.
Now look who the penultimate thread is.
I meant penultimate post. Oh wait, it's me!
I still think he will drop out - never underestimate the depths political types will go..... they will find something on him and he will bow out.
My more modest goal is, for this post only, to make “penultimate” the penultimate word.
Bwahaha!
Oh, wait.
1. Negotiation
2. Military Action
In each case, it comes down to whether the pen ultimately is greater than the sword...
A++
Clever, as always.
How do you keep the drillers out of you property?
With bags of your ancestors ashes strung on the property line, of course.
A little Fayette county. A little ancient Chinese secret.

From the very first King of the Hill:
Hank: So, are you Chinese or Japanese?
Kahn: I lived in California for the past 20 years. I’m originally from Laos.
[pause]
Hank: So, are you Chinese or Japanese?
LMAO! a typical pittsburgher response!
Well, my educated guess is that Fujiko is Japanese.
