San Francisco Giants star outfielder Melky Cabrera mounted a campaign to avoid his 50-game suspension that included a fake website featuring a fictitious product in an effort that was quickly uncovered by MLB investigators, the New York Daily News has reported.

Citing an anonymous source close to the case and an associate who told the newspaper he was "accepting responsibility for what everyone else already knows" concerning the fake site, the Daily News reported famed investigator Jeff Novitzky and agents from MLB's investigative arm have begun looking more closely at Cabrera and the scheme purportedly hatched in July as they seek the source of the synthetic testosterone found in his urine.

Not only will the Giants likely just cut Cabrera right now, but now Cabrera may be facing Federal charges of fraudulent activity across state lines, which could land him in Leavenworth Federal Prison for at least two years....

I’m a biased Dodger fan, but quite beyond any criminal sanctions, isn’t this attempted subterfuge grounds for (a) voiding his contract and (b) extending his playing ban well beyond the current fifty games?

Cabrera is undoubtedly a moron, undoubtedly behaved unethically, undoubtedly deserves his 50 game ban and should be released by the Giants - and that was prior to this conspiracy to cover it up, which could bring down legal penalties as well as a much longer ban by MLB.

But they need to reconsider the rules on performance-enhancing substances. Cabrera apparently used testosterone, a substance any man produces naturally. From what the sports talk shows are saying, MLB players - a lot of them - apply testosterone gel to their joints to aid in healing and prevent wear. Cabrera was dumb enough to get caught, but if we're now at the point where something like Ben-Gay is OK because it doesn't work and testosterone is banned because it does work, the whole ban probably needs to be re-thought.
