Part I

The Stage: The recent Aurora Colorado and Sikh Temple rampage killings have the urban liberals and their ilk once again howling for gun bans and damning semi-autos as weapons of mass destruction fit only for battlefields.

The gun culture counters with how it shows once again that venues where guns are banned (the theater and the Temple are gun free zones) are nothing but killing zones targeted by the rampage killers.

This article and Part II to follow, instead describes a formula for dramatically decreasing your odds of being the victim of a rampage killer. Nothing new here. Just a lifetime of experience, a little military training, all thickened with common sense paranoia.

How Big a Problem? First, despite the liberal media’s depiction of America as a Beirut style free fire zone, large scale killings (defined as 5 or more killed or wounded) like Aurora and the Temple have been very rare statistically.

We are a nation of 300,000,000. In 2010, there were 14,700+/- murders in the US of all sorts. Rampage killings have averaged about 18 killings per year since 2001. Add another 20 for those injured in the same rampage killings.

Basically, you have a 2x greater likelihood of being killed by lightning than being shot or killed at the hands of a rampage killer in a given year. Therefore statistically, you would be better served reading about taking shelter whenever you hear thunder and not worrying about John McLane Die Hard shoot out scenarios with a master criminal.

Quite a few of those kinds of recent crimes have been committed by members of the government-funded political/regulator class or their offspring—highly educated, formerly highly paid and believing that they are entitled. Quite a few local crimes in my area committed by hysterical teachers, government pensioners and the like (some with foreclosure/employment issues), too. Rates of those kinds of crimes committed by the bipartisan lefties currently in control of bipartisan politics will probably go up.
