Eh. People who take welfare should be watched like hawks ... but I don’t think we need to go so far as to monitor their diets.

i don’t think it’s so much about monitoring their diets, as it is monitoring their expenditure of taxpayer provided funds on LUXURY items. As i recall it, PA has no sales tax on groceries, but you do pay tax on prepared foods, restaurant etc. It’s a natural distinction.

When we are paying for it??

I think EBT should ONLY pay for unprepared starches, vegetables, and non-premium cuts of meat. It has nothing to do with nutrition and everything to do with expectation.

If someone wants to improve their lot and eat lobster, they can start working for it. There is no better incentive than diet.

“.. I don’t think we need to go so far as to monitor their diets”.

I do the bulk of our family’s grocery shopping. I clip coupons, buy “off” brand names, and buy only what is one sale. I can’t tell you how many times that the person in front of me has purchased lobster, shrimp, prime steaks, junk food and only brand names (usually more expensive). Then they pull out their EBT card. The program was sold as a way to supplement poor families who were unable to feed themselves with nutritious food. It tugged at America’s heartstrings because people didn’t want children or other people starving. The EBT user can purchase the ingredients to make their own pie. Flour, salt, vegetable shortening, fruit or nuts... IMHO, it should be used for food and not “packaged or pre-made food”. That is a convenience item (sort of like the slurpees and hot dogs that I saw paid for with an EBT card last week).
