Rush, I just heard you saying that you thought punishing the university itself is going too far at Penn State.
Yes, it appears that one evil man brought the whole thing down, but remember that to cover up evil is to promote it.
Everyone up in the highest administration must have known about Sandusky. No one alerted law enforcement. They "let him retire early.". No other football teams seemed to hire him, which if people knew nothing would defy logic. Everyone knew. The heads of the university knew.
They allowed him full access to their property and facilities. They did not alert the authorities to a known pedophile who was running a charity giving him access to the most defenseless children.
The heads of the university allowed these rapes to continue, so, sadly, to prevent anything like this happening again, the whole university is being brought down. By those who stayed silent rather than doing the right thing.
Of all people, I'd have thought you would understand the selfless bravery that discovering evil should have inspired and indeed is required, in the heads of a great educational institution.
Who cares which party? Maybe some of these big guys are friends of rush’s. Who cares? If I have a friend whom I find out knows about ongoing molestation, or had a chance to stop it but chose not to, I’d not continue that friendship.
Rush, if these guys who knew (even if they are telling you they had no idea, that is bunk) had molested your nephews, would you understand it?
Penn State is just as guilty as Jerry the Molester.
I have no connection to PSU but this really is over reaching. Penn State will pay for this for decades. If the university is destroyed, who will compensate the aggrieved ?

Did the players know about the wrongdoing and assist in the cover-ups? How abut the fans?
If you are a practicing Catholic, you are as guilty as all the molesting priests. See, I can do it too.
The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.
Albert Einstein
Prove it.
I get that everyone who did not know, especially the students and athletes, are total victims. It is very sad to me! I know a great athlete there right now!
But yes, when you are the head of an organization, and you allow evil, your organization will suffer.
It just will. I have not become a liberal. I don’t wish the innocent punished. But if proctor & gamble allowed something evil to go on in the corporation, the whole thing will suffer. Stock down, layoffs of innocent low level employees...these are natural consequences and that is happening at penn state. And it makes sense. Sadly.
“There was zero evidence linking Paterno to the coverup.”
I had read that there were emails to and from Paterno specifically showing Paterno’s culpability.
Tell me the page # of the Freeh Report that has the evidence showing Joe Paterno was behind the coverup. I’m begging you. I’ve been asking people since the Freeh Report came out to point to the page, nobody has done it yet.
Unlike some of the folks around here who “know” just about everything (who knew what, who told whom, when it happened, where it happened, ad naseum. Someone even claimed to KNOW what Dottie Sandusky knew. Amazing.), I THINK a large part of the accreditation review involves financial stability. The implication is that with the heavy fines that are coming down (and we haven’t even gotten to civil suits, yet), there’s some concern about financial collapse.
Of course, with this kind of “announcement” it almost becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
That’s what I THINK - not claiming to be an expert.

That actually is a good point. I guess I ONLY feel for the students especially the seniors. Trust me I don’t feel sorry for the Administration at all.
Joe Paterno didn’t USE e-mail! He couldn’t even turn a computer on, he was ancient and didn’t want anything to do with them. There were no e-mails to or from Joe Paterno!

Paterno was told about the molestation. in turn, he told the president of the university.
He should have provided the information to authorities. This is well established.
One of his first jobs was as a DJ on a station in McKeesport.
Interesting, I knew about KC, MO, and CA, but not Pennsy.
Wrong.. He followed state law in reporting second-hand information to higher ups. These are laws all teachers must abide by. If a student comes up to a teacher with information, by state law the teacher is suppose to report up the chain of commnd. The AG repeatedly said there was no crime committed by Paterno. He was told a watered down story by a witness that something went on with a retired faculty member, Paterno had him meet with his superiors. Paterno’s superiors repeatedly told him the situation was being handled.
Could he have done more? Sure, but he didn’t know all the facts. He’s not entitled to know the details of any investigation. He assumed, wrongly, that it was being taken care of. Nothing came out of it, he assumed it was looked into. This doesn’t make him a criminal, or even a bad guy.
