Initially, as a kid, I wasn’t attracted to Kubert’s long, swoopy lines. Always preferred the ‘tighter’ styles of artists like Russ Heath or Curt Swan. But gradually, I started recognizing Kubert’s brilliance, and became a fan.

I wish Roy Lichtenstein had attempted this one:

Joe Kubert’s art was what made Sgt. Rock worth buying (at least for me). I used to have nearly all of them when I was a kid in the 1960’s (a closet-full). One day I came home from high school and my mom had thrown all my comics in the trash!!!

I’d be a wealthy man now if I still had them.

May Joe rest in peace and his family in our prayers.

Deconstructing Roy Lichtenstein

Plenty of examples at the above website of Joe Kubert's work re-appropriated by Roy Lichtenstein.

I've always been a DC comics fan and “Sgt. Rock’’ and “Our Army At War’’(I loved “The Haunted Tank””) were my favorites.I loved Kubert's ethereal style. Russ Heath was another big favorite of mine. Rest in Peace Joe and thanks.

I LOVED “Star Spangled War Stories” as a kid. Especially the dinosaur editions. I bought some off Ebay a while back just for old times sake. I gave them to my son-in-law (who collects comics)when I was done reading them. Great old stuff that brought a smile to my face.

Amazing, he was still in fine form until the end. This is from an upcoming project, "Joe Kubert Presents:"
