In all fairness, it was right after the first Arab Oil Embargo (with the resulting zoom-up of fuel prices) that we saw inflation begin to take off. The West could have stopped this at once, by threat of military invasion of the Arab nations to “turn the spigots back on”. But it backed away, taught the Muslims that we could be rolled, and the rest is history...
