Word For The Day, Thursday, August 9, 2012 - nubilous
dictionaries ad nauseam | 9 August 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

nubilous \NOO-buh-luhs\, adjective
1. Cloudy or foggy.
2. Obscure or vague; indefinite..

Example sentences:
...trunks as thick as whisky casks and bark like rough-out leather, tower overhead so that the path between them is sheltered from the sun, creating a nubilous atmosphere, soft and pungent with resins, while soft brown needles cushion one's tread.
-- Michael Petracca, Captain Zzyzx

The sky above, dark and nubilous, parted like torn, plump bread and under a sun absorbent and intense, the water began to recede over low bridges. The storm was ending.
-- Elizabeth Léonie Simpson, Stranger From Home

Etymology:
Nubilous comes from the Latin root nūb meaning "cloud."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

And why do people say can when they really mean the word may?

Why do people say jealous when they really mean envious?

Why do some people misspell the word Syracuse and mispronounce the word corpsman?

Nubilous..Nubilous comes from the Latin root nūb meaning "cloud." That seems right enough. When the Ganns brothers of Ganns Auto Towing and Facial Massage, towed a couch home there was a cloud of couch following the tow truck and only a wore down nub of the couch arrived. It was nubilous!

I think you meant nubilous. That’s the beauty of language. So many choices.

maybe i am wrong, but think of nebulous as meaning vague and unformed, just kind of floating around loose; but nubilous makes me think of something formed but just clouded over, vague because you can’t see it clearly for the clouds.

You are not wrong.
I am going to take on the persona of Henry the Indian from Longmire and refrain from using contractions. I love Lou in that role.

For reasons that remain very nubilous to me, I just figured Hobbes would not mind this not-quite Olympic moment.

How about a parody?

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary
Over many a nubilous volume of Obama’s tax lore-
As in boredom, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping
As of someone loudly rapping, beating on my chamber door-
‘Tis the taxman, I muttered, banging at my chamber door-
To haul me off, and maybe more...

Or maybe not...

With all the nubilous weasel words
Emanating from the loony left
The only thing we can expect
Is more of the same old theft

From our empty, depleted wallets
They demand that we pay more
For everything from gas to food-
And even higher prices in store

Hold on to your last dollar-
They’ll be wanting that as well
It would be best come November
To just tell them to go to hell

“Say affect when they mean effect?”

A pet peeve of mine-oh, well-

Potato, po-tahto, tomato, to-mahto-let’s call the whole thing off...

Very, very good. A+ for you. Another one of my pet peeves is when people mispronounce height and say it with an extra “h” at the end. I always pipe up and say heighth is not a word.
