My understanding is fingerprints could have been taken at the crime scene but the local police didn't due to not trusting the new technology.
I don't understand how the parents could be repeatedly struck with a hatchet without blood being splattered all over the crime scene.
Perhaps the killer wiped the hatchet following each stroke but that then greatly lengthens the time required to carry out the killings and remove evidence.
Put a blanket over the bodies or a sheet and then hit them with a hatchet.
I'm not versed in forensics but doesn't blood still get slung around the room when repeatedly stabbing a fully clothed person? I'm not sure how a blanket over the head would be any different.
