Admittedly, I’m from the “Star Wars” generation, but “2001” is SUCH a bore. Kubrick did some good stuff, but I think he’s vastly overrated. “2001” felt like the ultimate in “Look how awesome I am” art-house nuttiness.

The film critic at Time, which people still read in those days, was in love with Kubrick. I think every film he brought out got a Time cover. I agree with you, however, he's overrated.

I had not heard any advance buzz about Star Wars. I still remember seeing the trailer for the first time and telling my wife and my friend, "I have GOT to see that movie"!

Kubrick only made ten feature films that he acknowledged as his own (sufficient resources, no other directors involved). It’s really a very good batting average.
