Word For The Day, July 31, 2012
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
usageaster [yoo-sij-as-ter]
-n
a self-styled authority on language usage.
[Usageaster is derived from the word usage and the suffix -aster which refers to something that imperfectly resembles or mimics the true thing.]
It just irks me to see that written but I’m glad to know it isn’t just a Texas error.
My back yard, northern NJ. It was just before the July 4th trip to Greensburg.
That deck was built in 1975 by the original owner. I bought the house 5 years later. It is cedar and I have power washed it a couple of times, and put sealant on it once. It will probably outlast me.
No--it's a poor education thing. The contraction "should've" sounds like "should of" and that leads to the confusion.
Yes, those are blatant, as well. But, considering your TX connection I have to tell the story of a business that sat at the main crossroads of Stafford, TX for years. It was named proudly: “Jone’s Dirt Yard” and drove me nuts. Maybe that’s why my sons can’t seem to get the apostrophe right — they were educated, largely, in TX! Private school, no less.
Grandchild #6, who is 4th from the left in the other picture, has a tendency to make a ridiculous face when she says "Cheese!" She's actually fairly cute. I was trying to take a picture of her the other day, but she had her face in that silly "cheese" position. I told her not to say "cheese," but to say, "I love you, grampa." She replied, succinctly, "No!" Nice kid.
beautiful yard, nice enough to look like southwestern PA ; )
she’s adorbs! sometimes candid pix are the way to go when they don’t quite know what to do with their face!
Good point - thanks
Texas bashing again? Perhaps his name was Jone
She is a very pretty little girl
thanks
How did you do that, HTML master?
How sweet, to have them all together! I think we’ve seen all of their baby pics here too. They are growing way too fast.
No. His name was Jones. People just really choke when they try to use an apostrophe with their name — especially if their name already ends in S.
I’m not TX bashing. I find it rather endearing. Besides, bad sign painting crops up all over the country. I remember an Antique shop in Snohomish, Washington (where I lived after TX) that listed its wares on a handpainted sign in their window. Amongst other offerings, they proudly announced their collection of “Jewry”.
The new ads are ridiculous
As the silly season goes on-
If O’s guys had an usageaster
To work from dusk to dawn
It would not be helpful for
All the grammar to be correct
When the content is so idiotic
That it just fails to connect
Some of us don’t want food stamps
Or other stuff on the dole, and
It’s not “a scary time to be a woman”
Without free abortion and birth control
Every time I see that commercial I cringe-talk about turning all women into objects and second class citizens (again)-is this what women-myself included-get for busting ass to bring up kids, work and pay our own way for the last 35+ years? Thanks a lot, Obama!
Thanks. That was the first time all 8 have been together. My oldest lives in Texas, and the rest are in the NY/NJ area. We are all going to Texas for Thanksgiving.
Your post reminded me of a funny moment on our trip to DC last week. I was telling the family that the Matisse work int he National Gallery of Art was so delicate that it could only been shown for a few hours a day and my youngest piped up “Thanks a lot, Obama!” We cracked up.
