Is there really an issue with using handloaded ammunition for self defense?
Only case rupture I have ever had was with some Hornady ammo, but it was a “light mag” offering so it was loaded a bit hotter than normal (still with in SAMMI specs).
For defense, I use factory ammo. Try to use what the local police carry if it isn't a product that is labeled as such.
Using factory ammo that a LEO also uses can land you in trouble. For the prosecuting attorney can say you “Were trying to play cop.” He suggested a good self defense loading, but not one labeled “For Law Enforcement use” or one that advertises itself as such.
I've met Ayoob and know a couple of people that have taken his course. It doesn't take too long using his examples and reasoning that the best thing to do legally is to just let yourself be killed. That really isn't his point of course, but it is to limit your liability in every way you possibly can so that if you are pushed to the extreme of defending yourself there are the fewest possible variables that the prosecution can work with. The problem with this concept is that minus any legal liability what so ever you could still be the victim an over zealous prosecutor like Zimmerman. Further you have to weigh the real risk that limiting your legal liability could make you a victim.
OK, TX seems diff than most other states in that regard then. The states Ive lived in dont have this protection. Does the TX law prevent the suit from being filed? If not then I think you still have to lawyer up.
As for the harassment thing its not pleasant and you find yourself potentially in the revolving situation esp if its gang related. You may also find yourself dead. As I said the BEST thing is not to have to shoot. You dont always get that choice but if you can avoid it do so.
It doesn’t matter. Shoot what is in the gun.
Juries understand that you don’t have the time to empty and reload your pistol with factory ammo.
Massad’s citations seem to not be relevant and there does not appear to be a case in which reloads played a factor.
The guy and his wife seems to be a clear case of murder. She would’ve had to hold the gun more than 21 inches from her head in order to avoid powder traces and people just do not do that. Too much chance of missing.
Ditto on the Dillon.
My XL650 has done some serious work over the past 20 years, without fail.
I once ADMITTED to the Dillon rep that I accidentally washed some parts down the drain, and they sent me a bag of spares anyway. Great company. And their M-134D minigun is nothing to sneeze at, either.
Your lawyer friend is in the minority.
If a DA does try that approach you have a simple irrefutable response:”No sir, I know I’m not a police officer but I use the same ammor for the same reasons they do. Are you saying their reasons for choosing their ammo are not valid?
“It is often said to be a potential liability issue during the subsequent trial.”
There hasn’t beena single court case that ever had that as an issue. Not a single one. It is simply been passed around on the Internet.
“it may affect the outcome of your inevitable day in court.”
Name a single case where that happened. It is simply urban legend.
It is the same reasoning as not using handloads “Standard ammo wasn’t enough, you had to use EXTRA KILLER AMMO!”
He suggested a nice hunting load in certain areas. It does depend where you are.
“Your ammo is still probably not as good as the best commmercial self defense ammo.”
You’d be wrong about that. In fact, most factory ammo has problems. Chrono the stuff and find it shoots velocities all over the place. It is rare to find match grade factory ammo, yet, reloaders can make it all day long. Another fact, professional shooters use progressive presses to make their own and do not use factory ammo.
You comment show you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about.
“The range that I use, wont allow handloads with anything rented from them.”
Firearms amnufacturers won’t warrant their weapons shooting reloads as some reloaders suck at it while factories usually do a good job. However, ranges also have been rejecting any customer supplied ammo as a means to increase range ammo sales.
“No matter what you load, if it ever goes to trail, the perps barrister is going to say factory ammo is just not deadly enough so he had to load up super deadly blah blah”
Really? Got one case to show where that happened?
Let’s put it this way, if you NEED to kill then your life must be in jeapordy. If it is then does it matter what you kill with? I mean, dead is dead, you or the bad guy. Worrying about a court case over your life means you really have your priorities screwed up and will probably get dead.
“Really? Got one case to show where that happened?”
I believe that sentiment was in Massad Ayoob’s book.
It usually depends upon whether the DA is a democrap who got elected pretending to be tough on crime.

Mass is an ass. He talks to hear himself talk. He spreads fear, uncertanty, and doubt; FUD. If anyone ever listened to his advice they just go kill themselves before a criminal does it and they get the blame. For all his bravado about guns he basically claims he and he alone is qualified to carry and the rest of us had just better not. Of course, buy his books, DVDs, CDs and pay to attend his shows first.
And you’re obviously an..... I’m sure you can finish that, you’ve heard it many times from many people over the years. You don’t like it but they’re right.
I do know what I’m talking about. You’re talking about exceptional people at the top of their game. I’m talking about the average masses. The reason so many gun nmakers advise against using reloaded ammo is not because it is better ammo but because the quality control is less.
