The problem with Penn State is, before Paterno, they were nothing, he’s all they had, and now that’s gone.Prior to Paterno Penn State had a first class coach - Rip Engle. I doubt very much that he would have put up with this kind of activity the way Paterno did.

The penalties on Penn State were pretty meaningless. That university has over a billion in endowments and will probably get several times the money involved back from alumni.

I would say Engle had modest success at PSU, but he was certainly no Bud Wilkinson or Bob Devaney.

Their highest ranking under Engle was 9th.
