Local 6 Exclusive: George Zimmerman Criticizes Own Defense Team

Man charged in death of Trayvon Martin later removes complaints on website

George Zimmerman’s newly relaunched website – one he is producing outside of the defense team’s control – included criticism of his own legal defense team’s site, although the comments were later removed, Local 6 has learned.

Wednesday night, statements on TheRealGeorgeZimmerman.com complained that the official GZlegalcase.com site “has fallen short” in three areas: “Disputing misinformation;" “Providing a voice for George;" and “Raising funds.”

The independent site was reestablished, in part, to “pick up the slack,” the website page stated Wednesday.

But by Thursday the entire “About” page containing those comments was no longer on TheRealGeorgeZimmerman.com site.

Asked by Local 6 about the criticisms, Zimmerman’s attorney, former Local 6 legal analyst Mark O’Mara, said he could not comment because he had not seen them.

But, he added, they would not signal a deterioration in the attorney-client relationship. There is “no schism whatsoever,” he said. “George and I are doing well. The whole defense team is doing very well … We are one absolutely cohesive team.”

Asked why Zimmerman would risk doing a national television interview while facing criminal charges that carry a maximum life sentence, O’Mara said, “This is a decision made by George to get his story out” and, he hoped, would raise money for his defense fund.

But Fox News never mentioned the websites that link to the defense fund donation page, and only about $1,500 trickled into the fund overnight. That compares to about $60,000 raised on the day the defense fund got its first mentions on Fox News in April.

“My understanding is it was going to be spoken about” during the hour-long Sean Hannity show, O’Mara said, adding there was “disappointment” the site was not referenced.

On Thursday, Zimmerman also posted a video on his website, thanking his supporters. You can watch the video by clicking here.

"This is our website, it’s not my website, it is our website where you can personally communicate with me and I hope to be your website to provide facts," Zimmerman says. "I will be frequently updating this website so check back often and spread the word to your family and friends. Once again, I humbly thank you."

The video is about two minutes long and is in both English and Spanish.

This guy wants to be convicted. He's done more to get him convicted than the prosecution has.

I agree. He seems to be self-destructive. Or maybe just dumber than rocks.

He probably has a reasonably competent defense team, but he’s being foolish giving interviews. He’s better off hiding until trial and saying a word.

If he had a competent defense team, or he was competent, he wouldn’t be giving interviews.

I would be a damn recluse if I were Zimmerman. And I would stay offline.

Well he is totally innocent and he can do what he wants. I suspect he will tour the country and give speeches on self protection. I love the guy. He will make millions. I hope he does.

Please, just a second.

Put yourself in his shoes.

You had to leave your family and hide out, as well as protect them.
You are put in jail.
You post bond.
They revoke it and put you back in jail.
They change the bond to ONE MILLION DOLLARS.
They put your wife in jail.
People all over the country are planning your execution. People all over the country are being paid to ensure your execution.

Everything you have is at risk, financially, and all the money people sent to help you has been ‘absorbed’ by the legal system.

You don’t know if you’ll live long enough to even get to trial, for defending yourself against a vicious assault with obvious INTENT to KILL.

The ‘government’ and local ‘law enforcement’ that you thought would stand behind you has deserted you, and in fact the Federal government has stated that they intend to pursue charges no matter what happens to you in Florida.

Now... would you be a little rattled ?

A lawyer fan only advise their client as to what is the best course of action and minimize the damage their client does, if the client goes against their lawyer’s advice.

The lawyer cannot control the actions of their client.

I think this guy is the biggest idiot in Florida. And there are a fair amount of idiots there. The only person more stupid than he, is his lawyer.

I know Zimmerman is scared to death and probably thinks that, if he can only explain himself well enough, people will understand and will a not guilty verdict when it comes time for will the jury to deliberate.

The problem is that the more he talks, the more notes the prosecution will take, and the greater the chance he will say the wrong thing that becomes problematic for the defense.

The lawyer probably isn’t the problem. Zimmerman is.

A lawyer cannot make a client do what is best.

When I used to watch cop shows with my kids they would start yelling at the TV: Don’t to any cop without a lawyer. That was when they were ten years old.

You don’t talk to the cops. Period. Nothing good will come of it. Get a lawyer and follow their advice. If the lawyer says talk...then talk.

99% of the time nothing good will come from giving interviews. He is coming across as digging the attention too much.

Shut up and go watch a baseball game or two. That’s my advice to him.

This guy is very erratic. I have no doubt the shooting was justified, but nevertheless he seems a bit paranoid. Also, he seems to have a problem keeping his mouth shut.

I believe that he needs to file for indigent status as his lawyer said he would. Better late than never. If the state of Florida wants to overcharge him for what he didn’t do, let them pick up the bill. After filing I think donations will pick up — but not before. People are also waiting for the judge to recuse himself as well.

I’d probably buy him a bunch of video games to occupy his time. Ones that aren’t connected to the net.

This is his second set of lawyers, the first ones quit because they lost contact with him. Zimmerman doesn’t seem to have good sense with his ‘tell alls’ on TV, it’s just one thing after another.
