CHICAGO (CBS) A 5-year-old Orland Park boy at the center of an international custody battle was sent to Ireland on Tuesday to live with his father, even though he was born in the U.S. and has lived most of his life here.
Jack Redmond was born in south suburban Blue Island, and has spent all but a few months of his life in the United States. His mother, Mary Redmond, says the Chicago area is all the boy has ever known. His school, his doctor, his dentist, his friends theyre all here.
Custody battles are messy, this one moreso because Jacks parents were never married.
A United States federal judge has ordered that Mary Redmond abide by an Irish judges ruling and return to Ireland to live and share custody of the boy with his father, Derek Redmond. (Though they have the same last name, they were never married.)
Jack was scheduled to fly to Ireland on a 6:45 p.m. flight from OHare on Tuesday.
Tuesday afternoon, his mother spent a few last moments with her son, since she doesnt know when shell see him again.
Im shattered. Im shattered. This is our home, and I dont want him to go, she said.
Derek Redmond is Irish, and when the couple split, he filed for custody in Ireland. An Irish court and the World Court in the Hague ruled Ireland had jurisdiction over jacks fate, and ordered he be shipped back to that country this week to live with his dad, even though Jack was born in the U.S.

And why are we to listen to the Hague? Has Obama bowed to them too?
I hope they treat him better than Lennox.
I’m surprised federales weren’t dispatched to kick open the doors to the family residence and brandish firearms at dangerous five year old boys a la Elian Gonzales.
“And why are we to listen to the Hague? Has Obama bowed to them too?”
It appears they were living in Ireland when they split, and had a joint custody arrangement set up by an Irish judge (seems reasonable).
She decided she didn’t like it so she left with the boy and came to the US (keeping him here, perhaps the real reason why he lived most of his life in the US)
Since she broke the law in Ireland by not abiding by the reasonable custody arrangement ordered by the Irish judge, she faces consequences if she goes to Ireland.
So nobody is mistreating this woman, she simply wanted it her way, the whole way, but got herself in a pickle. I’m guessing the father will be more reasonable and find a way for the kid to visit his mom, but that’s up to him.
The lesson to be learned here? If you’re a US citizen never,*ever* have a kid with someone who’s a citizen of *any* foreign country unless you’re prepared to have that child taken from this country without your consent.
So,,,,your saying Fathers should have no rights regarding custody of thier children?
One thing that isn't mentioned in this piece but,I'll wager,is a huge factor is the fact that Europeans have *enormous* contempt for the US justice system...courts,police,prosecutors,etc.Europeans (including European courts) almost universally believe that out court system is about as "just" and "civilized" as that in any South American banana republic.
As presented...only one parent can win here. A pox on the Hague court but I’m glad a male finally one a custody case.
Is that what I said? Let me re-read my post to check.I'll get back to ya.
Ruthie Ginsberg has all but stated her contempt for US law.
The lesson to be learned here?Appears to be that if you knowingly and willingly agree to a binding, joint custody arrangement in a foreign country before a foreign judge and later decide you want to violate that perfectly valid agreement and flee the country, then you can reasonably expect some sort of prosecution to be pursued against you.
Looks like she's fishing for sympathy to help get herself out of her self-made mess. All I can tell her is, "go fish".
Very true.Clearly, that contempt isn't only to be found in Europe.
well it certainly appeared you were siding with the mother against the father.Even tho it was the mother who violated a binding agreemant.
This woman broke a court order and took this child from his father and kept him from his father. She should have filed through the courts for relocation and a long distance custody and if that didn’t work she could have left the child with the father or stayed in Ireland.
Evidentally, she felt what she wanted to do trumped what was best for the child and the father and decided to thumb her nose at a legal court order. These women think that they have a golden womb or something and get to make all the decisions for everyone and then cry foul when they don’t get their way.
a co worker is engaged in a brutal custody batte and divorce...the man is not even an American citizen and has a head injury and other issues yet he has money in France from his head injury and using every penny to bankrupt this woman....the baby cries whenever she is out of sight...
yet, he has more custody of the baby girl than she does...often strangers who the mother does not know...male strangers...pick the baby up for the "daddy's" time....
Oh yes, and that article leaves out that the mother has dual Irish/American citizenship.
no "reasonable" "father" would demand that a small child abandon everything he has known since birth so daddy dearest could be the "winner"....
yeah....who the HELL cares about the little kid right...as long as the male won the battle...YIPPEE...
no real father would wish such harm on a child....
In a case involving US parent and foreign parent I'll side with the US parent, mother or father, every time...unless said parent is clearly demonstrated to be unfit to raise a child.Just out of curiosity did you support Elian Gonzalez's father's demand that he be returned to Cuba? I didn't.And I wouldn't have supported any such demand from his *mother* either.
“no “reasonable” “father” would demand that a small child abandon everything he has known since birth so daddy dearest could be the “winner”....”
They went to court in IRELAND. the MOM didn’t like joint custody, so she took the kid to the US to try to get a better deal for herself.
What is the father supposed to do when the mom is a psycho?
