Once the FBI shut down the operation, it built a safety net of new servers to redirect traffic from those infected with the virus.

Why would they do that? Is the FBI in the business of running Internet servers?

Like I said on another thread.....I guess I'm slow but I don't understand why anti-virus programs were not just simply updated. If the problem is that you can't update definitions on line why hasn't the fix been on sale at Best Buy for the last 5 years?

The antivirus programs were all updated as soon as it was discovered. The problem, though, is that machines already infected would not be able to update. By setting up the network of servers for infected machines, they enabled users to install and/or update their software.
