RE: As an MCSE I love the windows interface on my windows 7 phone over Apple, Android and Blackberry.
I gather you don’t mind spending money to move to a Windows 8 phone 3rd quarter of this year.
But what about the poor folks who bought Windows Phone 7 in good faith, believing that Microsoft would support their smart phone? Will they all be forced to PAY additional to get a Windows Phone 8 now?
Will their current Windows Phone 7 be rendered totally obsolete with tech support thrown out the window?
Wow, that user interface looks just awful. I’m not sure how anyone could be expected to access apps or glean useful information from it.
They had Windows Mobile and it died. They had "plays for sure" music and killed that service. Then they had Zune which is dead. They had Windows Phone 7 and it's been obsoleted right away.
Their offerings lack stability and credibility in any space that isn't the PC space.
I hope Windows Phone 8 fails. I hope Microsoft do not buy RIM or Nokia.
Actually, I've heard good things about the "Metro" interface, including from some folks who generally prefer iOS. The problem with judging from screen captures of a UI is that how well it works is largely based on interaction, not just visual appearance.
My purchase was too in good faith; however, the basic premis of windows 8 finally makes me willing to go back to the mobile phone company sorta happy. I have never had a contract two years leave me with a desirable phone so this case in that sense is no exception. I am just going to use the best technology and for the first time as a guy who got my employment for being a MS network admin in part, I prefer MS. Force of habit, having been left with too many broken phones or features I didn’t want, e.g., android/apple/blackberry. Not thrilled to spend more money but happy to have the best, thats all.
Maybe. It looks like an incoherent, unhierarchical mess to me. Different for the sake of being “not iOS or Android”. A good friend of mine just got a Windows phone, so I’ll have to ask him about it.
From about 2006 to 2010, I used various Windows Mobile 6.x phones. They were pretty darn good for their time. They weren’t user-friendly the way iOS or Android is, but neither of those existed then and if you were an experienced Windows user the mobile version was intuitive enough. So it’s not as though Microsoft has never had competitive mobile products.
No, your Windows 7 phone will still work. It won’t be a brick. Everything your phone can do, you’ll still be able to do.
Hey Dennis, weren’t you saying Windows 7 Phone was so great and it would knock Apple off their perch? Guess what, it’s dead. Microsoft decided to follow Apple yet again and use the same base OS for desktop and mobile. So Windows 7 Phone is an orphan. With 8 coming out its app store will dwindle since developers know there will be no future for their apps. Those who trusted Microsoft to put out a competitive, long-term mobile platform are yet again screwed.
Seems that the only smart phone company you can expect any long-term OS support from is Apple. So far every phone has been able to upgrade to the latest OS for at least three years after release, at least a year after sales ended. Androids have been very bad with this, often never even catching up to the latest version of the OS (and often when they do finally catch up, it’s short-lived as the next version is released soon after). And now we see what happens to Windows phones.
So get a Samsung android phone. Ether way, stop sending your hard earned money to those gay thieves in Cupertino. This is getting embarrassing! Consumers are ready for the Windows 8 phone which will start cutting into Apple profits mid to late 2013
It comes down to who do you trust? Bill gates or Steve Jobs. Since Jobs has passed on, so one can only trust Bill Gates and the new Windows 8 phone that will roll out next year. It will crush Apple into Apple Sauce
Microsoft fanbois were saying that about Windows 7 Phone. Guess that didn't happen. It's always the next thing that will finally do it, right?
Meanwhile, Apple has continued to push out better and better phones with industry-leading support. Of course I know who to trust, the one with the better track record. That is Apple.
I had an Android phone. It sucked. I looked at Android phones in January when it was time to replace it. I did have some Android apps I was using. The Samsung phones felt cheap in my hand. The Droid Razr looked good (like the kevlar!), and being 50% more expensive than the equivalent iPhone wasn't wasn't good but wasn't a deal breaker. But the screen was far too big, no-go.
Then there was the iPhone, solidly-built, screen about the right size and with incredible resolution and clarity. It was clearly the best phone in the store, no competition. So why are you trying to get me to buy inferior products?
This is getting embarrassing!
Yes. Now is not a good time to be Microsoft or a Microsoft fanboi with failure after failure.
Consumers are ready for the Windows 8 phone which will start cutting into Apple profits mid to late 2013
That's what you fanbois were saying about Windows 7 a while back, and now you're just hoping about a future product. Microsoft's actual best chance is in the enterprise since Blackberry is dying.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is still only promising 18 months of support for Windows 8 phones after their release. Here's Apple with a solid history of three years of support, and Microsoft can't even shoot for matching that. That's not good because Microsoft has a HUGE job getting back the trust of the consumers.
Think of it, Windows 7 Phone as a platform, with its entire ecosystem, from release to replacement, will have been only two years. There's no forward or backward compatibility, it's a complete orphan in its two-year life. I'd be pissed at Microsoft if I'd taken the advice of people like you and got suckered into it. I'd definitely be very hesitant to get another Microsoft phone based on this history.
Microsoft is pushing the PR as hard as it can for Windows 8, but there's a long way to go. They not only have to make people think their product is better, but they have to assure a buying public that's been burned bad a couple times that it won't get burned yet again.
Like I've been saying, Microsoft had better already have a update to Microsoft Systems Center in beta that already can manage all aspects of Windows 8 phones and tablets. An update for Exchange 2010 and even Active Directory should already be in the works to support these devices. Forefront should already be modified to handle the phone connections. I haven't heard an inkling any of this, but if it isn't happening then some Microsoft managers need to be fired immediately for their lack of foresight.
As an MCSE I love the windows interface on my windows 7 phone over Apple, Android and Blackberry.
I don't know how having an MCSE can get someone to like that dreadful interface, but how does it feel to get screwed? Microsoft claimed Windows 7 was the best, the thing that made it better than the iPhone, the future of phones, then Microsoft abandoned it. They were even pushing it as they were working on making Windows 8 incompatible -- they knew they were going to orphan it and its users, but still wanted your money so they didn't tell you. I hope you didn't buy a lot of apps for it.
I'm swimming in Microsoft products at work, administering dozens of servers and blades that are running Microsoft enterprise software with a price tag that could probably buy my house many times over. I'm particularly a big fan of Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2. Solid, reliable products when set up right.
But that's servers, and Microsoft is making good server stuff these days. But don't let that lead you to believe the quality will automatically roll over into phones because in that area Microsoft management has been clueless for years. Windows 7 Phone had no chance to succeed in the market against Apple and Android. It was, quite simply, inferior in every way. Microsoft is effectively admitting this by abandoning Windows 7 Phone in its first generation. It was a pathetic, desperate attempt to grab back lost marketshare after they got caught with their pants down with the touch revolution Apple started.
And remember the rule, don't buy a new Microsoft product in its first iteration. Smart people won't buy Windows 8 Phone for at least a year after its release. Don't buy the dog and pony show -- remember where it got you with Windows 7 Phone. Who knows, by the end of 2013 Windows 8 Phone may have proven itself, and quality hardware may even be available, that I may buy one. That is if Apple hasn't already leaped ahead again.
Nothing wrong with being apps crazy and a power user. But 90% of smart phone purchasers just want a device they can use as a cell phone and use to access the internet. They get a few stray apps. For this a Windows 8 or Android is cheaper and better. iPhones are overkill and a waste of money for this 90%
Matter of fact the cheaper Androids are out selling iPhones like crazy in places like Uruguay and Philippines with middle or lower standard of living where it is perfectly good enough for their purposes. They don’t have the time, money or inclination to be ripped off by the gay Cupertino mafia.
Microsoft and HP did esentially the same thing to those of us who bought the HP6900 series PDAs. They upgraded the software for all new phones and products, but refused to make it backward compatible in any way.
I decided at that time that I would never buy another HP product nor a Windows based phone. These companies need to realize that their sales (and thus, their livelihoods) depend on their reputations. And, stiffing the purchasers of their products is not a good way to build that reputation. There are plenty of other manufacturers of both hardware and software out there.
Bwahahahahaha!
