A Microsoft Research report, published in April 2011 but only just coughed to the top of the web ahead of the Windows 8 launch, has found that overclocked CPUs are substantially more likely to make a Windows PC crash than chips left untouched.

In other news, researchers were shocked to discover that NASCARs were significantly more likely to suffer catastrophic engine failure than Mom's Toyota Camry.

There’s also the fact that chip manufacturers have a habit of taking chips that passed the quality control at a higher clock and labeling them at a lower clock in order to fit their market segmentation strategy.

Plus Intel sells chips purposely designed for overclocking.

Personally I prefer the historical “at your own risk” approach. If your OS is crashing because you overclocked, then that’s your own problem, don’t expect any support. Crank the clock back down until it works.
