So when Jerry Falwell said the purple Teletubby was gay, the media ridiculed him for looking for homosexuality in a kid’s show. But this counts as insightful analysis?
For the record, Falwell made the statement in 1999 and was over two years late to that party.
By December 24, 1997, CNN aired the following:
"The Teletubbies also have a following among the gay community. Tinky Winky, who carts around a red handbag but speaks with a male voice, has become something of a gay icon."
The Village Voice had already praised Teletubbies for having a gay character. There were other media notes about TInky Winky. When Falwell entered the mix, a couple of years late, it was as if nobody had ever brought up the subject before.
