Obviously our Moms hated us. Mine bought that stuff, too. My Gunsmith likes Thousand Island Dressing on his salads. I can’t even stand to look at it on a Salad as it reminds me of that horrible orange Sandwich Spread.

I’m with you! When my mom would visit us she would use 1000 Island dressing on her salads and I could never look at her while she ate it. I told her it was so thick and disgusting and pinkish-red that it should be illegal. She ignored me!

I got up one night as a kid and my dad was eating a— wait for it— Hellman's and strawberry preserve sandwich as a midnight snack! I was sickened!

My mom told me the next day during the Depression sometimes that's all my dad, as a child, had in the house— Mayo and homemade Strawberry preserves. It was the one thing he could still stomach that he was forced to eat or go hungry. She said not to feel bad that I said “Yuck” because he was glad I could say that and could eat what I wanted. I was little and not born until my father was in his forties, so I had no idea, but I remember feeling guilty and sad for what I had said.

To this day I don't know if he ate those sandwiches because that's what he truly wanted or just thinking back to those old days.
