Vanity- Remember "Brubaker"?

Toured the Cummins Unit of the Arkansas Department of Corrections last week. The only thing I could relate it to was Angola, LA.

The heat and haze was intense as the crews rode out and in on cart trains pulled by a tractor, with 5 armed horseback officers surrounding each 60-70 man detail.

18000 acres of bottom ground, much of which was vegetables that were hand-hoed by these crews to feed the rest of the ADC.

Its something you have to see to apprehend.

Been out of the loop awhile, but.

When you, under your state’s constitution take authority over convicted felons and make them wards of the state- you are now their keeper.

You mentioned a life of leisure and air conditioning, did I?

Do you have a clue about penal systems? I’ve been in one for 3 decades. There but for the grace of God go I...

If you need some scriptures to meditate on, let me know.

When inmates are in charge of inmates the state has relinquished it’s authority over convicted felons. I would offer that each state’s constitution places these convicted felons as wards of that state, and the duty to provide a certain humane environment flows therefrom.

Seizing the fullness of it with your eyes may well be different than reading about it....

Tough concept for some.

It’s a trip back in time. God’s judgement here on earth! Those prisoners will have something to think about when and if they get out...

I can’t knock it, but you don’t find that mindset north of Mason-Dixon much.

I’m a Missouri boy with one foot in each camp.

Have you seen it?

No, but I doubt I have handcuffs suitable for apprehending it.

Apologies for being unnecessarily provocative. The thread got me thinking about why the conditions you described were as they were, what it would take to change them significantly in an impoverished state like Arkansas (either higher taxes to further depress the economy or cuts in services to non-criminals), and the evil most of the inmates have willfully wrought to get where they are. I completely agree that abuse, exploitation, and neglect of inmates is unacceptable (legally or morally).

I was going to apologize to you for being thin-skinned....

Redford was cool when I was a kid but he’s not a hero of mine and the topic was substantive.

Been offline awhile since the above but I thought I had seen you posting good stuff since I’ve been here.

Agree with your assessment of the system. The southern states have some right thinking but some wrong baggage.

They are working thru it.

Take care FRiend!

lol!

The penal system in the deep south is an eye-opener for Yankees (which I have no clue whether you are).

You got all day to catch a runaway from a hoeing crew in 18000 acres of delta bottom ground. I gathered that not many try...
