My friend, Jack, joined the Coast Guard in 1938. He was stationed here, in northern Michigan, until the war broke out. He had a choice, be inducted into the Army, or stay in the Coast Guard. He opted to stay in the Coast Guard.
He went to the Pacific Theater where he drove landing crafts onto Tarawa and Okinawa. His craft was blown up from under him at Tarawa, so he had to spend a couple of days with the Marines, there. He’ll be 93 this year, and comes into our local watering-hole for a couple of beers every day. He is a personal hero of mine, and we will share a toast tomorrow in the memory of the men lost on the beaches of Normandy.
I have looked at that photo dozens of times. My Uncle Harvey was in the 101st that day and that place. He is 90 today and can out work me.
I was there with my wife and friends on Memorial Day. What an incredible monument to the heroes of D-Day!
