I don't believe the honest ones were ever deceived, at least those with any scientific skill.

It has been widely known since at least the early 90's among those with scientific backgrounds that anyone who pushed the agenda had political motives. In fact it was frustratingly obvious. I spent many hours debating the issue with dogmatic "scientists".

Sorry. I should have thrown in. Like you. I have sat down at dinner tables with my elder bro a PHD organic, Biochem, and a very well recognized spectrocopist professor of many years, associates at my Bell Labs facility, chemist and physicist, who understood early on, the analysis and modeling regarding the CO2 in particular role claims of somehow causing a "global warming effect" was, how should I say it, pure bull shit.
