THEY do things different across the ditch. It's a crazy story so here are the details: Kiwi pig midwife - it's a thing - embraces Dutch courage, in the form of a beer, for a bride competition. These are facts.
But it wasn't all fun and games; the Taranaki Daily News found itself caught up in a storm of controversy over its decision to publish the photo of the beer-swilling bride on its frontpage.
We can't publish the photo here, so click here to see what we're talking about Katrina Hayman, 33, caught the attention of the Long White Cloud when she was snapped swigging from a stubby in a wedding dress.
The already married Hayman, who delivers baby pigs for a living, suited up in white all over again for the Taranaki Bride of the Year competition.
"At your wedding you're relaxed because you have your family and friends around for support but in the competition you are sort of all by yourself. It was quite stressful. That's why I was drinking a beer," Mrs Hayman said.
She doesn't need to explain herself to us. The competition's organisers, though, demanded an explanation from the newspaper for publishing the "disgusting" photo.
"As I am sure many would have preferred to have seen a photo on the front page of the winning bride of the year, rather than a free commercial for Tui," said co-convenor Lynn Gilbert-Smith
The Daily's editor, Roy Pilott, ran an editorial defending the decision because the picture was fun, colourful and well-received.
