I had to rent a car 3 years ago to get to work because my car was in garage. I asked for a basic ride. The only car they had available was a retro 2009 Mustang. They let me have it for the basic price. What a ride and great power. I showed up at work with the retro and was surrounded by car admirers fellow employees there.
I wished it as mine instead of rental.
In 1968 I flew from Dallas to San Francisco for a business meeting in Sunnyvale. I had reserved a basic Mustang at Hertz. The clerk apologized that they were out of the low-priced Mustangs, but "would I be willing to take a Shelby GT-500 at the basic rate?" I "grudgingly" agreed. Had to get somebody to come out and get myself past the tilt-up steering wheel. What a great day . . . had to go via Half Moon Bay too.
At that time, Hertz had put a whole bunch of GT 500s into the rental fleet. The story was that sports car racers were renting them and pulling the engines to put into their rides for the weekend, then reinstalling them on Sunday evenings.
