I recall reading about Lincoln's visit to Richmond on April 4, 1865. When a black man groveled at his feet in supplication, Lincoln ordered him to his feet, telling him his behavoir was unbecoming of the citizen of a free republic.

At least that man had something to be grateful for. And the current president accepts groveling as his due.
