Word For The Day, Monday, 4/16/12
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
1. of little value or account; small; trifling: a picayune amount. 2. petty, carping, or prejudiced: I didn't want to seem picayune by criticizing. noun 3. (formerly, in Louisiana, Florida, etc.) a coin equal to half a Spanish real. 4. any small coin, as a five-cent piece. 5. Informal . an insignificant person or thing.
Etymology: 178090; < Provençal picaioun small copper coin (compare French picaillons ), derivative of an onomatopoetic base *pikk- beat, here referring to the coining of coppers
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Here is my example with WFTD.
Oh no, no, no.... they better step back up offa my man, Dan Bylsma. Yes there was more than a picayune amount of violence in the Pens-flyers game, but if anyone needs FIRED, it's that little pissant Crosby.

No pushing at the door please!
Oh yeah, and class is in session.
The media will perseverate upon any picayune peccadillo to destroy a conservative candidate.
They should be plunged into perdition for such pusillanimous prejudice!
Perfect! A+++ ; )
Sorry, Darling, but they’re gonna be screaming for Danny-boy’s head. You’ve got to blame the coaching for not even trying to get the team playing some sort of defensive system when it was obvious after Friday night that the Flyers were not going to be beaten playing end-to-end frenzied hockey.
Saturday everyone on the team is saying “oh, we don’t have to change anything, just eliminate mistakes.”
Think again.
Funny how Friday’s game was probably one of the most exciting I’ve ever seen. Physical, yes, but not dirty. Up and down the ice action, lots of scoring, some remarkable individual efforts.
Take the same game to Philly and things turn into a brawl.
“Goonito ergo sum” is the Flyer motto.
Barry’s issues: remote, picayune
His solutions: juvenile and jejune
Liberals can’t meet a budget
So they make facts up, fudge it
As they all sing their class-warfare tune
Not a picayune problem: it is supposed to be near ninety degrees for today’s running of the Boston Marathon.
OMG, do not blame the venue for the Pens behavior. Asham crosschecking the previously concussed Braden Schenn to the FACE and then punching him in the head when he was down for good measure is NOT to be blamed on the venue. Even ardent Pens fans were ashamed of their behavior yesterday. I’d seen a tweet saying that Dan prob told them to initiate the first fight, to get something started, if that’s true that’s bad. But i think he’s a good coach, and their mistakes and goonish behavior is all their own.
Is it Patriots day? bc i work in DC and i am pretty sure they are celebrating EMANCIPATION day here, and that’s why DC gov’t and hence, MY GARAGE, is closed. So i got to park a block farther away for $20. Groovy! A+++
that is NOT good! A+++
Well, starting a fight in Philly to get them off their game is a tactic that has worked before.
But, anyway, you swerved by my main point there. Where is the coaching this series? I haven’t seen anything that doesn’t look like an end-to-end free-for-all.
That’s not working. They need to do something different on Wednesday.
Picayune is a picayune city in Mississippi.
I lived in Picayune for two years while my dad worked in Bay St Louis.
A+++ what’s their newspaper called? The Picayune Picayune? ; )
