Pace = 1 meter (roughly). 30 paces on each side = 60 paces. I can split a butterfly's antennae at that distance with my scoped .22, but bless me if I could hit the broad side of a large barn with a muzzle-loading flint-lock pistol.
Besides... challenged gets the choice of weapons. I prefer 2 lb. hand sledges. Or ball-peens.
