Word For The Day, Monday, 3/25/12

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

burgeon; verb

1. to grow or develop quickly; flourish: The town burgeoned into a city. He burgeoned into a fine actor. 2. to begin to grow, as a bud; put forth buds, shoots, etc., as a plant (often followed by out, forth ).

Etymology: 1275–1325; (noun) Middle English burjon, burion; shoot, bud < Anglo-French burjun, burg ( e ) on; Old French burjon < Vulgar Latin *burriōne ( m ), accusative of *burriō, derivative of Late Latin burra wool, fluff (compare bourrée , bureau), presumably from the down covering certain buds; (v.) Middle English burg ( e ) onen, borgen < Anglo-French, Old French, derivative of the noun

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

not at all, i think we have an even up chance on the merits and from what i read this AM, they are not inclined to punt on this, as some feared they would, by saying it’s not ripe for decision. they seem to want to decide on the merits, and i also read that both sides were questioning calling the individual mandate a TAX and since that’s the argument the gov’t is advancing as one way around the commerce clause, the fact that they are skeptical of it being called a tax, is good. The gov’t is arguing TODAY that it’s not a tax for purposes of the Anti-Injunction Act, but will be back tomorrow to argue it IS a tax in their merits argument. you NEVER want to be in that position as an atty arguing a case, it’s truly impossible.

That’s amusing, cause Jeannette is probably the one place in the county with the highest percentage of blacks. Around 20, versus 2 for the entire county.

But, it’s not a hood.

I was driving a few months ago and a very large group of young black men were in the middle of the street playing ball

You didn't call the police to report them? ;-)

and i will encounter more than that just walking across the street from my ofc to the parking garage, some in suits, some gangbangers, some street people, hoodies and non. my point is, white people who spend NO time in a heavily minority area are going to react differently to things, than someone who is lives in an ethnically diverse area like zimmerman and me. again, my point is that the hoodie and the race are irrelevant in this matter except to the race pimps looking to incite a race war. and there are PLENTY of those.

like thomas sowell says:

Playing with racial polarization is playing with fire. Much has been made of the fact that the teenager was unarmed. The only time I have ever pointed a loaded gun at a human being, I had no idea whether he was armed or not. All I knew was that I could hear his footsteps sneaking up behind me at night. Fortunately for both of us, he froze in his tracks when I pointed a gun at him. If he had made a false move, I would have shot him. And if it had turned out later that he was unarmed, I would not have lost a moment's sleep over it. You know that someone was unarmed only after it is all over. If he attacks, you have to shoot, if only to keep the attacker from getting your gun. It so happened that the man I pointed a gun at was white. But he could have been any color of the rainbow, and it would not have made the slightest difference. Let the specific facts come out in the Florida case. That is why we have courts. Have we forgotten the Jim Crow era, with courts making decisions based on the race of the defendants, rather than the facts of the case? That is part of the past that we need to leave in the past, not resurrect it under new racial management. Who is really showing concern for the well-being of minority youngsters, Geraldo Rivera who is trying to save some lives, or Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and others who are hyping this tragic episode for their own benefit? Race hustlers who hype paranoia and belligerence are doing no favor to minority youngsters. There is no way to know how many of these youngsters' confrontations with the police or others in authority have been needlessly aggravated by the steady drumbeat of racial hype they have been bombarded with by race hustlers.

i think your perspective is skewed by some racist posts on FR. i haven’t gone to the FR threads on this but have followed commentary on twitter and on MSM and the race hustlers are the ones capitalizing on this. your rank and file racists are gonna be racist no matter what, but the race hustlers are attempting to promote an industry fueled by racial animosity with this thing. I think that is far more dangerous than your handful of FR racists who will never change.

Oh, c’mon. You’re tied with Buffalo and playing them tomorrow night. For the final playoff spot.

That’s gotta be fun. I hear Ovie is surging a bit, too.

it took all morning but, thanks be to God, you finally GOT THE POINT i have been trying to make. you of all people, are the one always telling me not to pay attention to the nasty dreck that FR houses, and here you allowed them to color your perspective on this entire case which is about so much more.

Huh! Trayvon was suspended for 10 days due to marijuana possession. Heard it on the radio followed by his mother tearful complaint that now they are trying to ruin her dead son’s reputation. Truth be damned, I guess.
