Before (and presumably after) our technological society, the vast majority of people never went farther from their home than they could walk in a day.
The conclusion: Make sure you're in a good spot, because after the SHTF you aren't going to be going anywhere.

Besides, the police/military will keep me safe. And if I want to go anywhere, I just unplug my Volt and drive. No gas or diesel needed.

Well ... it would be nice to be on vacation in someplace innocuous and far away (like Tahiti) when the apocalypse occurs. I suppose that I can’t count on being that lucky though.
You are right about not going on vavcation.
However, trade and commerce is what can hold a civilization together. Hopefully it won’t be as bad as setting some goods out on the ground and backing into the bushes to see what is offered. A society with a strong Judeo/Christian backbone can accomplish miracles. But then again some a$$hole said we were no longer a Christain nation.
