I don’t care for Geraldo but he makes sense on this point. Recently I was out walking and had my hoody up because it was windy here in San Jose. A county Sheriff drove by me slowly and looked me up and down. I wasn’t offended. He was doing his job and I admit I looked suspicious.
In the book “The Gift of Fear” the author points out that we “profile” as a survival mechanism and some people are killed because they ignore that instinct to be politically correct. I raise my “alert” radar in numerous situations: Latinos with prison tattoos and/or sporting gang colors, blacks on BART wearing “thug” clothing, white bikers, Vietnamese gangsters etc. I freely admit I avoid areas where there is a lot of gang activity or high levels of crimes committed by blacks (most of Oakland, Richmond, Hunters Point-Bayview area of San Francisco). Oakland has a crime rate at least 3x of that of San Jose (and most of the homicides here are gang-related.)
