I was thinking the same thing about a month ago. I've already got an AR-15, but wanted something higher caliber. I got a Mosin-Nagant a few months back and I really like it, but then I wanted something around the same caliber in a higher capacity semi-automatic. I did a bit of research and just purchased a Springfield M1A .308 earlier today.

This is the .308 I have. It is not semi-automatic, but it can be used by left-handers or right-handers. The 4 bullet clip makes it real easy to reload different type round combinations and is capable of handling ballistically superior pointed bullets. This combination gives the accuracy of a bolt action with the fast chambering that a lever action provides. The .308 is fast, accurate without the recoil and a very affordable available ammunition.
