You're simply telling them that you're submissive to them, if you try to ignore them. The reason that cats often seem to be attracted to people who aren't "cat people" is because when a cat looks and you, and you look away, in "cat language," you're telling them that they're the boss, and they'll come over to rub their forehead and cheek glands on you, marking you are theirs.
