I have a book recommendation, containing characters both delightful and invidious: Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, by Helen Simonson. The writing was outstanding and the characters well-developed.

BTW, last year I read a book that came highly recommended...A Discovery of Witches. Yes, witch and vampires. The sequel comes out this summer. Warner Bros. bought the movie rights. It was surprisingly well written. I actually loved the book. Bought it for my daughter for her birthday.
