I wonder if these people were Preppers.

Well, that's one more idea to add to the list.

So far, we have:
a) Their mortgage is underwater and they walked away from the house.
b) Since they "ran a successful commercial cleaning business", maybe they saw, read, found out about something they shouldn't have and have been squirreled away in witness protection, by the FBI.
c) they are just plain kooks and have basically said, "I've had enough of this rat race" and just decided to "start over".
d) and now we have Preppers.

I'm pulling for witness protection myself.
But then again, I've been told I'm a little off kilter.

That doesn’t make sense....they left food & clothing behind.

I suppose “witness protection” is a possibility.

Maybe they joined a cult that told them to leave everything behind?
