Today in Detroit the Mittster delivered his much touted economic speech to the Detroit Economic Club. And it went over about as well as youd expect it to. Via Sarah B. Boxer at the National Journal:
Wrapping up a much-touted economic speech at a football field here on Friday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney fumbled the message ball.
Answering a question about a possible fall matchup with President Obama, Romney said he has the best chance of defeating the incumbent and went on to say he will be a friend of Michigan, a state defined by its relationship cars. He then mentioned how many he has himself.
I love this country. I actually love this state. It just feels good, being back in Michigan, Romney said. I like the fact that most of the cars I see are Detroit-made automobiles. I drive a Mustang and a Chevy pickup truck. Ann drives a couple of Cadillacs, actually. And I used to have a Dodge truck, so I used to have all three (big automakers) covered.
The reference to the sheer number of cars he has, and his wifes two high-end cars, is likely unhelpful to a candidate who is trying to shake an image as a wealthy elitist out of touch with the economic worries of everyday Americans

We had about the same size crowd for Moochelle here in Louisville yesterday.
One would think that some critical member of the Detroit Economics Club is an Obama plant. Appearances are everything, and if the above is true, my hat is off to that person. Absolutely brilliant. Evil, but brilliant.
It is a very embarrassing thing for Romney, and it is getting great internet play.
It is also a reminder of this day in 2007, in another stadium.

“The Mitt Romney campaign is promoting this video of a one-day fundraiser they recently held, trying to communicate energy and enthusiasm for the candidate. As the NYT reported yesterday they generated $1.5 million, a far cry from the $6.5 million they brought in a few months ago at a similar event. But what I noticed is that in order to communicate the bigness of the occasion they rented out Boston Garden and Fenway Park. But its empty. If youre going to hold a big free event at a sports venue, I dont think you communicate momentum by having an empty stadium.”
