Of course, in Beserkeley, it is always OK to say "Yes" with someone else's money.

Best is to carry protein bars or bags of nuts and hand them to the beggars by the sides of the road. If they are truly hungry it will help them.

I have recently seen some of these people being “dropped off” at their exit in a nice car. Nicer than mine at the time. This angered me. I am wondering if there is a big pimp style organization that uses these people and collects The money.

I only say yes if they have a good story and reality has been kind to me lately. The story has to at least make it sound like this money could put you on the path to self sufficiency, I don’t care if it’s a lie, make it sound good. Panhandlers need to understand that they’re in the business of selling a sense of goodness, the person is giving them money to feel good about themselves. So sell it well.

I don’t let panhandlers approach me. I know of a guy from a nearby town who was in Pueblo, CO walking down the sidewalk when a man approached asking for spare change. While he was distracted the beggar’s partner came up behind and hit him in the back of the head with a 2x4 and they robbed him. He is now paralyzed from the neck down. Never let strangers approach you. Years ago I was almost robbed in the lobby of the hospital in Richmond, Virginia by two guys who wanted to know the time. They grabbed my wrist and went for my watch which looked expensive but wasn’t. Just then the elevator opened next to us and they ran.

Right on guys! I'm no liberal commie b%#^%^#t who needs to feel any responsibility towards those who have fallen on hard times.

I knew a guy once, long time ago now. Nice guy - people remember he could sing the Lord's Prayer so sweetly. Went off to World War II as a 19-year-old kid. Had the back luck to be wet and freezing in a foxhole during the Nazi Ardenne offensive. Saw his buddies blown apart; his best friend died in his arms. Came back and was never the same. One of those guys who jumped whenever a car backfired; woke up in the night screaming. Started drinking to numb the memories. Over the years things went from bad to worse. He bought a six-pack every night after his janitor job and drank himself to sleep in front of the TV; his cigarettes fell from his hands, leaving burning trails in the floor. He lost his family and ended up on the street, still fighting the Battle of the Bulge during feverish dreams under cardboard on the mean streets... And every day as I pass by, I thank God I am not like that that sinner.

Typical liberal air head.

Vignettes: Macon, GA, ca 1990. Middle Class guy comes up and asks for a few bucks to feed his family and points to a woman and two kids standing in a lot across the street. Wife and I buy four hamburger/fries meals and bring them to her. Woman almost cries in gratefulness. I felt bad as I was trying to put the guy on the spot, thinking it was a scam.

Read of a guy who used to give a business card to those “Will work for food” guys, with the advice to see him for a job. Never was contacted.

Old joke (I think - nowadays I wouldn’t doubt it): Guy selling pencils at 25c each near the entrance of an office building. Guy going to work always drops a quarter in the cup but never takes the pencil. A month or so later, the guy drops his usual quarter, only to be told that “pencils are now 35c each.”

Reading about the Depression, there was a raggedy old black guy who came to the back door of a farmhouse and asked for either a meal or some clothes. The farmer jokingly said that he had both, and for the guy to make a choice. The black guy said, “Well people can see how shabby I am, but they can’t see how hungry I am, so I guess I’ll take the clothes.” He got both.

Last year a well-dressed man approached us for a handout as we parked at MacDonalds. Blew him off and later felt bad. I used to routinely blow people off with the idea that there were plenty of safety nets available. Now, it reminds me of stories people told me of the Depression Days when well-dressed men, looking embarrassed, would ask for a handout - and things are pretty much at that level now in my area.

I have come to say a quick prayer when I see one approaching - "Lord, is he with you?" The reason I do is because there were a couple of times when I was being tested and I failed miserably. "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares". It was especially damning because at these particular times in my life I had been praying for the Lord's help in my own life and yet, given an opportunity to prove myself worthy, I was unwilling to take a chance on helping someone else because I just projected the worst, cynical aspects of my own existence on to them. And even if they aren't angels, they were still God's children.

If you are convinced of nothing beyond a cartesian world, then none of this matters anyway, and if Jesus is your personal Savior, you will know exactly what I'm talking about. You know right away when you fail in His eyes.

Just pray for discernment, that's my advice.

Massad Ayoob, in one of his books (it could have been “In the Gravest Extreme”) said that it’s not a bad idea to have a twenty-dollar bill wrapped up in a rubber band for those occasions in which a bunch of punks has you alone and vulnerable. Rather than just blowing them away (and you know all the paperwork involved in that!), he says to flip the twenty to them and say something like “Here, buy yourself some beers.”

Well, it’s kinda on topic. They are, in a sense, begging prior to assaulting you.

I know it is not right on some politically correct level, but we give most of our alms to the needy directly. It’s not tax deductable and that irks my husband, but he puts up with me - thank God. I get to know the problem and decide. Often it is just bad luck and things will change if you help direct it or give a break to someone when they need it. It strikes me in the process of living because I am alert.

Since the welfare system is geared towards minorities and permanently poor people, I focus on white working class who are outside the welfare system but struggling to survive. White Americans don’t like asking for state assistance when they need a boost. There are no help from whitey tribalist organizations and activists (which is a good thing, OWS). Whites are expected to be super human and help everyone else. They will struggle and just need a life preserver to get their footing or get a break. Call it racist. That is what I do from experience.

I pay for glasses, sports team fees, back to school supplies, health care costs to the hospital, gas, school tutition, or at the grocery check out when working moms are embarassingly short. You can see good people struggling all around you. You watch for the dad trying to get two pairs of pants for each kid in the fall within budget and you just line up behind them and give the check out clerk your credit card and tell the dad, it is from (insert your lover’s name) back-to-school foundation (health care boost foundation, sports equipment or fee foundation, the school tutition foundation, the food or gas foundation...) and pay the bill.

I think everyone should look out for the working class, who can afford to give away money. They are at least trying and deserve help when you can give a boost to them, especially when they have children. I do it as discretely and impersonal as possible and this is the only way most will accept any gift.

You don’t ask if you can help because the working class will reject it; you just do it because you want to make someone’s life more blessed that day. Maybe they prayed for help and that is why you noticed them. Maybe that is why I come upon them.

Give big tips to working class people who do an excellect job, and if more people did this, they would make as much as me and fixing my overflowing toilet which is much more important than writing and negoating contracts in the scheme of things! If my car did not work, I would not make it to work. My car mechanic - the man and not the shop owner - is tops in my life. To me, this is the way free people do “social justice” without the government.
